With all of the changes Google is making, they are trying to instill more quality and integrity amongst the higher ranking websites for a better user experience. This is having a negative effect on automated link building. A year ago, 2011, automated backlinks may have worked great, but not anymore.
These automated backlinks typically come in the form of forum profiles or blog comments. The forum profiles are most commonly built using a service called Xrumer and the blog comments with a software called Scrapebox or Senuke X.
Most of us have purchased backlinks or automated link building campaigns before to save on time. These are the same softwares the companies you pay for backlinks use to provide you with automated links, unless the company specifically says the links are done by real humans.
In December 2011 I lost my rankings…
One of my sites, which had just made me over $3000 in November had almost completely disappeared from Google. My visitors went from 6000/day down to 700/day. I changed nothing except for my link building campaign.
I was using automated forum profiles and blog comments through a company called Ultra SEO Solutions. I first started out with a smaller monthly package that provided me 1000 automated blog comments and 1500 profiles.
I was working with about 20-30 inner pages to my site at the time that I was continuously building links to. In November 2011, I upgraded to 2500 blog comments and 3000 profile links as my site grew, which include high pr links and edu and gov links.
Then, on December 8th, 2011, tragedy struck. I had lost 90% of my rankings. I had a feeling it was my link building but gave these links the benefit of the doubt and decided to stick it out with the campaign for a couple more months just to be sure.

Around the 7th – 8th each month my rankings would always drop after building up the last half of the month. This leads me to believe that instead of drip feeding my links they are blasting them all at once. This is called link velocity, and I was under the interpretation that these links were built daily, or at keast were not blasted. Any SEO company should know that link velocity is crucial to your success.
Whenever 1000’s of links are built to a site at one time it does not look natural and will cause either a Google dance or a Google penalty, I knew this already. The completion of my monthly link building campaign was said by Ultra SEO Solutions to take all month, leading me to believe it was a daily campaign, I was very wrong.
What is my plan now?
I have cancelled my services with Ultra SEO Solutions and am trying out Backlinks Genie for a while. My subscription at Ultra SEO was $263/mnth and Backlinks Genie is $137/mnth, so I am saving over $100/mnth, as long as it works and I continue.
What I liked about Backlinks Genie, aside from the automation, is the ability to building 2, 3, and 4 tier link building campaigns. They offer every kind of backlink imaginable:
- High PR forum profiles
- Social bookmarks
- Web 2.0 properties
- Their own high PR network
- Automated blog comments
- Automated forum profiles
- Automated directory submissions
Link diversity is another crucial point that is great about Backlinks Genie, they offer every type of link you can imagine. Building all sorts of links to your site also makes it look much more natural in Google`s eyes. This is one thing I also was not getting from Ultra SEO Solutions as all of their links at the moment come from blog comments and forum profiles.
Tiered link building is the way to go now. For those unfamiliar with tiered link building, it essentially means building layers of backlinks to your backlinks. I am on the hunt for the most cost effective, and efficient way to do this.

Do automated backlinks serve a purpose anymore?
I am still a fan of automation, since it allows me to concentrate on other aspects of my internet marketing business. They do still work if done correctly.
Automated blog comments and forum profiles are great for 2nd and 3rd tier link building.

I wanted to share this with everyone to hopefully prevent you from making the same mistakes as me. Link building is an essential part to search engine optimization if you want to make any money doing affiliate marketing.
Automation is also an integral part to having an internet marketing business and automated link building, or automated backlinks, still play a vital role of used correctly.
