Duplicate Content vs Content Syndication

The age old mystery, is there such a thing as duplicate content? Yes, there is also such a thing called content syndication as well. It is imperative that you know the difference between the two.

It could vary well save you a TON of time and save you from getting penalized by Google, or in a worst case, de-indexed. If you use content for SEO or traffic purposes this is a must read.

With all of the algorithm changes Google has made I have been forced to change my SEO tactics. My link building strategy was hurting me more than helping me by using automated backlinks.

I am now working on a strategy to focus more on using High PR content networks and Web 2.0 properties for high quality backlinks. I am using a tiered system that involves article submissions as well. I am able to do this through Backlinks Genie automatically which is pretty dam cool if you ask me. I loved automation.

My biggest worry was whether I should be using duplicated content from my original post, or spun content for my SEO. I had to put this mystery to rest for myself once and for all.

What is the difference?

Duplicate content is:

  • The same, or very similar, content is found across different pages or posts on the SAME domain.
  • If Google recognizes you are using the original content from your site on other sites to manipulate Google for SEO purposes you WILL get penalized or potentially de-indexed.

Content syndication is:

  • Using the same content from original posts or pages on your website across other sites (Web 2.0, Article Directories, News Sites, RSS Feeds etc)
  • This is NOT considered duplicate content unless it is being done with the intent to manipulate the search engines by receiving backlinks using the exact same content, usually is masses. Google does not like to be manipulated.

What to use content syndication for:

  • Article marketing for traffic and marketing purposes
  • Submitting RSS Feeds
  • Backlinking, just do not be submitting hundreds of articles with the same syndicated content, it has to look natural, slow and steady.

What NOT to use content syndication for:

  • Building backlinks in masses through submissions to article directories, web 2.0 sites, or content networks. Again, make it look natural.

Other key notes

If you plan on using content syndication you must make sure your original post that you are trying to market has been indexed by Google first. If your post is not indexed Google will choose the most relevant syndicated article and give it priority ranking.

The risk you run by not having your article indexed before syndicating it is have one of the syndicated articles on another site taking priority over yours. Therefore, no ranking for you.

Summary

Basically, you can use content syndication, not duplicate content, without risk as long as the articles you have syndicated are not created in masses for the purpose of providing backlinks, Goolge will see this as manipulating your website rankings.
